The European TRAP project tackles plastic pollution along the coastline of the Eastern Coastal Functional Area (AFLE). It combines citizen science and cross-border cooperation to involve citizens in the collection and analysis of waste. These efforts both raise public awareness and generate data that helps identify the source of plastics, understand how they are transported in the Mediterranean, and track their fate. At the same time, the project combines these field observations with numerical modeling approaches to establish a system for monitoring and predicting accumulations. Its goal is to improve understanding of pollution dynamics in the northwestern Mediterranean and to provide an operational tool to strengthen prevention policies and optimize waste management at various scales.
