"Banyuls la Lumineuse, regional capital of the fight against plastic pollution

In 2019, a major awareness-raising campaign took place on the problems of plastic pollution that the city faces in all living areas. This action was led by the Mayor and in collaboration with the CNRS and Plastic@Sea.

  • Launch of an action "Our Mediterranean without plastic" by promoting the concept of "Banyuls, university town" which defends its territory on the Mediterranean and intends to promote Ecotourism in its wine-growing area.
  • This action will be based on a strong communication dynamic at local, regional and national level. It will be based on a strong commitment from partners through actions carried out at the local level.

Several actions have been put in place :

  • Plusieurs modèles de panneaux de sensibilisation ont été installé aux abords de la ville de Banyuls-sur-Mer. Ces panneaux sont visibles aux 4 entrées de la ville.

  • L'edition d'une carte super-héros (5.000 ex.) a été imprimée dans le bulletin municipal de juillet 2019.

Reminder :

The work of the Tara Foundation, the OOB and Plastic@Sea has made it possible to to show that the Mediterranean is the most polluted sea in the world by microplastics. In some areas, fish have a one in two chance of consuming have a one in two chance of consuming microplastics instead of the zooplankton zooplankton that they naturally feed on. The predictions are alarming alarmist : by 2050, the mass of plastic will be equivalent to that of fish in the of fish in the oceans.
